Inaugurated in 1910 to commemorate the centennial of the Mexico's War of Independence, the monument is composed of a single 148 tall column and features four bronze statues at its base, symbolizing law, war, justice, and peace. At the top of the statue is a bronze statue, standing at 22 feet tall, depicting Nike, the Greek Goddess of Victory, which was designed by French sculpture Enrique Alciati. The base of the monument also serves as a mausoleum since 1925 for Heroes of the Mexican Independence.
