The mostly outdoor museum highlights animals and plants of the Sonoran Desert region with 230 native mammals, reptiles, amphibians, birds and insects as well as 56,000 individual plants made up of 1,200 native species. The 21-acre Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum opened in 1952 and expanded in 2013 to add the Warden Aquarium containing freshwater and saltwater aquatic life from the area's rivers and Gulf of California. It also has two animal shows, an art gallery, two gift shops and two restaurants.
