Located in the region of Umbira, the town of Assisi is best known as the birthplace of St. Francis. St. Francis founded the Franciscan religious order in Assisi in 1208. It is also the birthplace of Saint Gabriel of our Lady of Sorrows and St. Clare, the founder of the "Poor Sisters" known today as the Order of Poor Clares. Some of the towns most notable sites are of the Basilica of San Francisco d'Assisi and the Cathedral of San Rufino.
