Located along the Rhône River, the French city was once called Vatican City as it was the home of seven popes from 1309-77 creating a schism in the Catholic Church. Avignon has preserved its papal legacy with Papal Palace and the fortifications constructed around it. Other points of interest are Avignon Cathedral, Avignon Bridge, Calvet Museum, Philippe le Bell Tower, St. Didier Church, Small Palace Museum-Avignon and Clock Square. Avignon's Historic Center, Papal Palace, Episcopal Ensemble and Avignon Bridge are designated as a United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) World Heritage Site. The city originated back in 4,000 BC.
