This basilica dedicated to Pope Clement I was once a private home that was the site of clandestine Christian worship in the 1st century AD. Basilica San Clemente consists of three historical layers: The 12th-century basilica is built on top of a well-preserved 4th-century church, which was built next to a 2nd-century pagan temple dedicated to Mithras (god of the sun).
