Biltmore Estate

A private estate and chateau style mansion in Asheville, the Biltmore Estate was built in 1895 and is the largest private home in the United States. A prime example of of the Gilded Age of architecture, the mansion was based on the designs of the Château de Blois, Chenonceau and Chambord of France. The surrounded landscape of the house was commissioned by its owner, George Washington Vanderbilt II, to be an expansive park, featuring a forest, a series of farms along the river, conservatory, a formal Italian garden, tree-lined esplanade, and much more. Still owned today by the Vanderbilt family, the estate was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1964 and is open to tourists.
