This majestic 9th century castle is situated on a hill above the Danube River overlooking the Slovakia capital of Bratislava. It was the home of the first Hungarian King Stephen I during the 11th century in addition to other Royal Hungarian kings as Bratislava became an official coronation city. Habsburg Queen Maria Theresa had Bratislava Castle renovated and added several new structures and French gardens between 1761-66. An 1811 fire destroyed the castle and restoration efforts didn't begin until 1957. Today, the castle and its grounds are a sight to see with magnificent rooms and Slovak National Museum exhibits on display.
