Often shortened to Caltech, this prestigious educational institution is located on 124 acres in Pasadena, Calif., near Los Angeles. California Institute of Technology was established in 1891 as a trade school by Amos Gager Throop. Today, the school focuses on science and engineering. Caltech faculty, alumni and trustees include 32 Nobel Laureates, 57 National Medal of Science recipients and 13 National Medal of Technology and Innovation recipients. Its known for its long time rivalry with Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Alumni include Intel co-founder Gordon Moore, Jet Propulsion Laboratory co-founder Qian Xuesen, astronauts Harrison Schmitt and Gordon Fullerton, and director Frank Capra.
