This Venetian public square got its name because the Virgin Mary is said to have appeared to Bishop San Magno in the Seventh Century demanding him to build a church in her name. Santa Maria Formosa was constructed and dedicated to the Virgin Mary. It was rebuilt in 1492 maintaining its cross shape and using the blueprints of architect Mauro Codussi. Notable artworks in the church are Madonna of Misericordia by Bartolomeo Vivarini, St. Barbara by Palma il Vecchio, and Madonna and Child with St. Dominic by Giambattista Tiepolo.
