Catacombs of Rome
These underground burial places on the Appian Way, which include miles of tunnels, are where early Christians buried their dead and also held clandestine church services. The Catacombs of Rome, a few of which are open to the public, feature tens of thousands of burial niches. There are approximately 40 known catacombs outside the ancient walls of Rome.
