Visit the opulent chateau that inspired Versailles! Located 55 miles southeast of Paris, this palace was the first to use the "Louis XIV style" of design, combining architectural grandeur and interior design with intricate landscaping. Set amongst the surrounding 1,200-acre gardens and parks, Vaux-le-Vicomte was constructed on a platform completely surrounded by moats, giving the illusion of a castle floating on water. The gardens are particularly exquisite and are widely considered to be finer than the gardens of Versailles. During the summer months, enjoy a candlelit walk through the gardens and dinner at one of the chateau's fine restaurants.
