This ancient town on the Tyrrhenian in the province of Rome dates back to Roman times. Civitavecchia, which means “ancient town,” today is a major cruise and ferry port famous for the Forte Michelangelo (Michelangelo’s fort), and the master himself helped design this imposing fortress. Most people only come to Civitavecchia to catch the ferry to Sardinia but it is worth a look, if for no other reason than to eat at one of its many quality seafood restaurants.
