The city of Coachella is located in the Riverside County in California, and is part of the Coachella Valley region. The city was founded in 1876 and was formerly known as Woodspur, which was later changed to Coachella in 1901. The city was created when the Southern Pacific Railroad built a rail siding on the site. Coachella did not become a city until 1946 and was also the center of much Chicano political activism due to the United Farmers Workers movement of the 60s. The city of Coachella is near the city of Indio, which is also in the Coachella Valley Region, and which hosts the annual Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, one of the most famous music festival in the west coast.
