There have been two Elisabeth Bridges in Budapest, both dedicated to the well-liked Queen Elisabeth, Empress of Austria who was assassinated in Geneva in 1898. The first bridge was made of iron and destroyed by Nazi troops in 1945. The 951-foot bridge across the Danube was replaced with another, more modern structure with no ornamentation in the 1960s. In 1932, a bronze monument of Queen Elisabeth was constructed near the bridge.
