Nestled beside the Ojo de Liebre Lagoon, the Guerrero Negro Salt Mine is the largest open air salt mine in the world. Own and operated jointly by the Japanese corporation Mitsubishi and the town's government, the salt mine employs the majority of Guerrero Negro's residents. These bountiful salt flats developed as sea water evaporated along the shore after high tides, leaving large amounts of salt behind.
