This Altstadt (Old Town) square is at the center of Kröpeliner Strasse, a shop-lined, cafe-infused, cobblestone pedestrian mall replete with 15th- and 16th-century burghers’ houses. Heidelberg University Square is also home to the Fountain of Happiness and buildings that comprise Heidelberg University, the oldest university in Germany, which makes it a favorite gathering place of the large, local student population.
