This stunning lake with crystal blue waters is Central Europe's largest lake and a major vacation destination for Hungarians. Lake Balaton started drawing tourists during the 18th century as vacation homes and resort towns sprung up along the shores of the freshwater Hungarian lake. Its surface area is 229 square miles and it's fed by Zala River. The lake is surrounded by many towns and villages including Balatonfured, Tihany, Heviz, Szantod and Keszthely.
