This freshwater North American lake is located in both the United States and Canada. Lake Champlain has a surface area of 490 square miles and has nearly 590 miles of shoreline. It is situated in the U.S. states of Vermont and New York, and the Canadian province of Quebec. The lake is named after French explorer Samuel de Champlain, who claimed to have spotted a lake monster when he came upon the lake in 1609.
