The 1,800-acre California cultural institution that opened in 1970 exhibits hundreds of desert animals including camels, giraffes, zebras, gazelles, sheep, wolves, leopards, hyenas, snakes, tortoise, bearded dragons and many birds. Living Desert Zoo & Botanical Gardens contains plants from North America and Africa including 100-plus species of Agave and many are displayed by ecosystem. The zoo also features the Gecko Gulch playground, Marilyn's Merry-Go-Round, WaTuTu replicated African village, Miriam U. Hoover Discovery Center, animal encounters, wildlife shows and special displays.
