This social hub and heart of Munich is named for the Virgin Mary, and in its center stands the column of St. Mary that is crowned by a golden statue of her. Marienplatz is perhaps best known for its Carillon (Glockenspiel) in the Neues Rathaus (New Town Hall), where every day at 11 a.m. and noon visitors can watch its 32 figures perform the Schäfferltanz, aka “Cooper’s dance,” which was originally performed in 1517 at the Marienplatz to commemorate the end of the plague.
