Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve

Dedicated by former Mexican President Jose Lopez Portillo as a reserve in 1980, the Monarch Butterfly Reserve is home to millions of North American butterflies during the winter season. Here they nest below the forest canopy and visitors can walk among them. When the heat rises underneath the canopy the butterflies fly en mass above the trees, creating a veil of orange and black.
