This sacred 4,000-foot Spanish mountain near Barcelona is the site of many religious pilgrimages largely in part because of the reported miracles performed by The Virgin of Montserrat statue in the Benedictine Monastery of Montserrat. The monument is one of the Black Madonnas of Europe with some Catholic legends telling it was carved in 50 A.D. by St. Luke in Jerusalem and historians citing it was created in the 12th century. Montserrat has approximately 80 monks living in the Catalonian holy mountain retreat and visitors can hear the inspiring songs of the famed Escolania boys' choir every day at 1 p.m.
