Built to commemorate the Mexican Revolution, the dome shaped monument was based on Frenchman Emilie Bernard's neoclassical design, which was chosen by public competition. The construction of the monument began when the Monument to Mexican Independence was inaugurated in 1910, but was not finished until 1938. The open structure of the monument featured an Art Deco and Mexican socialist realism style upon completion. Today the monument also acts as a mausoleum for the heroes of the Mexican Revolution of 1910.
