Dedicated to preserving the Roman artifacts and remains of Pompeii, the Naples National Archaeological Museum is home to the many world renowned antiquities of Rome and Greece. Central to the museum if the Farnese collection of preserved statues and the Herculaneum papyri, a collection of 1,800 papyri script that were preserved during Mt. Vesuvius's eruption. Visitors to the museum will marvel at the Farneles Hercules, an ancient statue that cemented the image of Hercules in Western minds, and the Farnese Atlas, the oldest depiction of Atlas and the oldest depiction of earth as a celestial object.
