The tomb of the famed Emperor Napoleon I is housed inside Les Invalides, a complex dedicated to the military history of France. Located under an ornate dome painted by Charles de la Fosse, the sarcophagus of the Emperor is made of red quartzite, stands on a green granite base, and is surrounded on all sides by sculptures and inscriptions symbolizing Napoleon's military victories. Several of Napoleon's family members and other French military heroes are also buried here.
