Established between 713 and 715, this Baroque landmark Salzburg structure is arguably the oldest nunnery in the world. Nonnberg Abbey was featured in the classic film "The Sound of Music." It was the real life nunnery that Maria Augusta von Trapp, of whom the movie was based upon, served as a nun. Its Maria Himmelfahrt church is the oldest church in Salzburg. The nunnery is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and featured on an Austrian commemorative coin.
