While many believe this Prague cemetery also called Starý Židovský Hřbitov dates back more than 1,000 years, the oldest grave is of rabbi Avigdor Kara from 1439. Old Jewish Cemetery is located within Josefov, or Prague's Jewish Town and contains approximately 12,000 visible tombstones. It is thought that the number of people actually buried here is far greater because some graves are layered as Jewish law prohibits the removal of gravestones.
