This central mound of Rome's seven hills is important in the city's history as it contains the remnants of the ancient palaces of Augustus, Tiberius and Domitian as well as the Temple of Apollo Palatinus among other fascinating ruins. Roman mythology twin brothers Romulus and Remus are said to have been mothered by a she-wolf in the Lupercal Cave on the mountain. Recent archaeoogical findings determined that people have been living on Palatine Hill since 1000 B.C.
