The town hall of Florence is a crenellated Romanesque fortress-palace overlooking Piazza della Signoria and the copy of Michelangelo’s David. Inside Palazzo Vecchio, visitors will find Machiavelli’s old office and the Sala delle Carte Geografiche (Map Room), which houses Cosimo I’s collection of 16th-century maps charting everywhere in the known world at the time. Its illustrious staircase leads up to the Sala dei Cinquecento, named for the 500-man assembly that met here during the Florentine Republic.
