One of the most popular tourist districts in Edinburgh and the city’s main shopping district, Princes Street is the southernmost street in New Town. Construction began here in 1767 based on architect James Craig’s plans. Princes Street begins at the Duke of Wellington statue and passes by Princes Street Gardens, the Scott Monument that commemorates Sir Walter Scott, the Royal Scottish Academy of contemporary art, and the National Gallery of Scotland.
