Built in 1118, this Romanesque church is only 5 ½ miles from Montalcino. Legend has it that Charlemagne’s troops arrived here sick with the plague. An angel appeared to their leader and told him how to cure his soldiers. In return, he founded the abbey. The church that actually stands here was built much later and measures 144 feet long. Its entrance is guarded by two lion statues. Today, you can hear Gregorian chants from the church throughout the day.
