The majestic castle originally built for Duke of Milan Francesco Sforza beginning in 1450 on the grounds of the former Visconti Castle has been renovated and refurbished many times throughout Milan's history. Sforza Castle, or Castello Sforzesco is a major Milan landmark and cultural institution containing The Museum of Ancient Art, Pinacoteca, The Museum of Musical Instruments, The Egyptian Museum, The Applied Arts Collection, The Achille Bertarelli Collection and the 21st Century Furnishings and Wood Sculpture Museum. Works by Michelangelo, Leonardo de Vinci, Andrea Mantegna and many other notable artists are displayed.
