One of Italy’s most famous squares, which turns into a racetrack twice a year during the country’s most famous horse race, can be found in this jewel of Tuscany. Siena plays host to the renowned Palio, a bareback horse race around Piazza del Campo in which 10 of Siena’s 17 districts, contrade, compete. Piazza del Campo, aka “Il Campo,” is a sloping piazza and the city’s favored gathering place replete with restaurants and relaxing cafes. Siena is also famous for its imposing Gothic Duomo with its white and greenish-black marble in alternating stripes.
