Back on Dec. 24, 1818, the classic Christmas carol "Silent Night" was performed for the first time at the former St. Nicholas Church in Oberndorf, Austria. Silent Night Chapel & Museum commemorates the famous holiday song, its composer Franz Xaver Gruber and its writer Joseph Mohr. The octagon-shaped chapel was constructed on the St. Nicholas Church site from 1924-36. The museum is situated right next to the chapel. The festive site is especially popular on Christmas Eve when thousands of tourists travel there to celebrate the holiday.
