The third largest synagogue in Europe and the largest in Southeastern Europe is this Moorish Revival architectural gem in Sofia's city center. Sofia Synagogue was constructed from 1905-09 for the city's Sephardic Jews. It was designed by architect Friedrich Gruenanger. The synagogue interior is magnificent with a 1.7-ton chandelier, Venetian floor mosaic tiles, Italian marble columns and decorative woodwork. It contains the Jewish Museum of History and a gift shop.
