Here you will find Rome’s most beloved relaxation spot, the Spanish Steps. Piazza di Spagna, at the base of this world-famous outdoor staircase, was once considered Spanish territory due to the Spanish Embassy of the Holy See, hence the name Spanish Square. In addition to the steps, which can get so crowded in summer it might be hard to find a seat, Spanish Square is also home to the famous Fontana della Barcaccia, a Bernini-designed fountain depicting a flooded boat at the center of a basin which was inspired by the flooding of the nearby Tiber.
