Situated along the Adriatic coast, Split is the second largest city in Croatia. Although visitors may not stay long in this transportation hub, it has something for everyone. Roman emperor Diocletian built his palace here in ancient times. Now the medieval quarter lies to its west and to the north is Veli Varos, built from the 14th through 17th century. East of Old Town is Bacvice with beaches and vibrant nightlife. Take a bike ride along the harbor-side promenade or hop a ferry to the many offshore islands. Split also has Roman ruins, museums, views from Marjan hill and crazed fans of the HNK Hajduk Split football club.
