This breathtaking Austrian town is situated on the shores of Lake Wolfgang and at the foot of Schafberg mountain in the country's Salzkammergut region. St. Wolfgang originated in the 10th century when legend has it Bishop of Regensburg Saint Wolfgang threw an ax and decided to build a church where it landed along then-Abersee lake. That church containing Gothic altarpiece by Michael Pacher has since become a pilgrimage site for many throughout the years. St. Wolfgang also is famous for its Weisses Roessl, or White Horse Inn, that is the setting for the well-known musical comedy of the same name.
