One of the world’s greatest works of art can be found in this city that sparked the Renaissance. Sculpted by Florence’s favorite son Michelangelo, the statue of David is located in the Gallery of the Academy of Florence (Galleria dell’Accademia) and draws hundreds of thousands of visitors every year. The over 14-foot-high statue carved from a single block of marble represents the Biblical hero David and is an emblem of Florentine power, liberty and civic pride.
