Scotland’s first university and the third oldest university in the English-speaking world is the University of St. Andrews. Founded in 1413, it allowed students to stay in Scotland instead of leaving to attend schools in France and England. Today, the university is a research center and international place of learning. Some of its most famous students include Benjamin Franklin, Rudyard Kipling and JM Barrie.
