The important Prague square dates back to 1348 when it started as a horse market by Charles IV. Wenceslas Square has been the site of many historical events including when an independent Czechoslovakia was declared in 1918 after the Austro-Hungarian Empire was defeated in World War I. The square contains the iconic St. Wenceslas equestrian statue and National Museum as well as many nightclubs, bars and movie theaters.
