The affluent Maine town is a popular summer vacation retreat along the coast and is divided into the areas of York Beach, York Harbor, York Village and Cape Neddick. York was settled in 1624 as plantation called Agamenticus and was a favorite summer spot for famous author Mark Twain. Town highlights are York's Wild Kingdom, Cape Neddick (Nubble) Lighthouse, John Hancock Wharf & Warehouse, John Sedgley Homestead, Elizabeth Perkins Hous, Emerson-Wilcox House, Mount Agamenticus and Goldenrod.
