The seat of the Archbishop of York is the second most important cathedral in England behind Canterbury. York Minster is also the largest Gothic cathedral in northern Europe and one of the most striking medieval structures in the world. York Minster is renowned for its stained-glass windows, some of which dates back to the 12th century. Its 76-foot-tall Great East Window is the largest expanse of medieval stained glass in the world.
