Zocalo is the main plaza of Mexico City, and was originally the ceremonial center for the Aztec city Tenochtitlan, making it a historic center for Mexico City. Zocalo is also a center of government for both the nation and the capital city; political events are constantly being held there. Zocalo is also an artistic venue, hosting the annual Festival de Mexico and many other cultural parades.
