The vast 1,017-acre San Francisco park welcomes more than 13 million visitors annually with its numerous attractions such as the Conservatory of Flowers, Japanese Tea Garden, de Young Museum, California Academy of Sciences, Golden Gate Park Aquarium, Strawberry Hill, Golden Gate Park Carousel, San Francisco Botanical Garden, Buffalo Paddock, Beach and Park Chalet and the many windmills. Golden Gate Park is the third most visited park in the United States and is larger than New York's Central Park. The recreation area that was named after the nearby strait was established in the 1870s under the direction of its first superintendent William Hammond Hall.
