The 400-foot deep canyon near Flagstaff, Arizona runs 20 miles long and contains 25 ancient cliff dwellings built by the Sinagua Native Americans. Walnut Canyon National Monument was established in 1915 and created from erosion by Walnut Creek about 60 million years ago. The 3,600-acre park site contains a visitor's center, museum and several trails. Canyon wildlife includes 69 species of mammals, 28 species of reptiles and amphibians and 121 species of birds.
