Behold the extravagance of the Ajuda National Palace. Though begun in 1795, the palace did not become a residence of the monarchy until 1861 as the royal family was exiled to Brazil during its construction. Started in the baroque style, the luxurious palace was completed in neoclassical. Since 1968, it has been open to the public as a museum displaying grand tapestries, statues, fine art and furniture.
