One of Portugal’s greatest and most historic monasteries is this UNESCO World Heritage Site that was founded in 1153 by Afonso Henriques, first king of Portugal. Alcobaça Monastery is a masterpiece of Cistercian Gothic architecture that dominates the town of the same name. Behind its baroque façade is a forest of 12th-century arches, a monkish church, a refectory and a large dormitory.
