This ornate Bulgarian Orthodox Cathedral in Sofia is dedicated to the 200,000 Russian, Ukrainian, Belorussian and Bulgarian soldiers who died in the Russo-Turkish War from 1877–1878. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral is one of the world's largest Eastern Orthodox cathedrals and was constructed from 1882 and 1912. It was designed by Alexander Nikanorovich Pomerantsev in Neo-Byzantine style. The 34,100 square-foot cathedral has a gold-domed roof, 12 bells and an Italian marble interior. It contains a museum, which is part of the Bulgaria National Art Gallery, with Bulgarian Orthodox artifacts.
