The principal city of the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan Area is the site of Arlington National Cemetery, The Pentagon, the Iwo Jima Memorial, United States Air Force Memorial, Women in Military Service for America Memorial and the Netherlands Carillon. Arlington was founded in 1801 and named after Henry Bennet, 1st Earl of Arlington - who which a nearby plantation was named after. Arlington National Cemetery was created on land owned by Civil War Gen. Robert E. Lee.
